Radio Measurements of Coronal Magnetic Fields
نویسنده
چکیده
The measurement of magnetic field strengths in the solar corona using radio observations is reviewed. This is a well established technique that exploits the fact that the electron gyrofrequency for typical coronal magnetic field strengths (100–2000 Gauss) lies in the radio frequency range. Opacity from the resulting gyroresonance emission from hot plasma above active regions allows the direct measurement of the field strength, while some information on the direction of the magnetic field can be obtained from polarization measurements. In addition to the gyroresonance technique which works for strong fields above active regions, other measurements, such as the polarization of bremsstrahlung, also can provide information on weaker quiet–Sun fields. This paper is intended as a text version of the presentation, and in particular citations are not intended to be complete.

Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements through Gyroresonance Emission
This article reviews the use of gyroresonance emission at radio wavelengths to measure coronal magnetic fields. The spiralling motion of electrons in the 200– 2000 G fields in the solar corona produces sufficient opacity to render the corona optically thick, making it easy to recognize such sources in microwave images from their coronal brightness temperatures. Where gyroresonance sources are p...

Faraclay rotation observations are unique amongst radio occultation mcasurcmcnts in that they respond to magnetic field in addition to e.lcctron density, making it possible to probe the coronal magnetic field. Transients observed by Pioneer 6 Faraday rotation measurements in 1968 in the heliocentric distance range of 6-11 R. arc shown to be caused by the radially expanding coronal streamer stal...
متن کاملTransients and Mass Ejections Observed in Radio Occultation Measurements of the Solar Corona
A wide variety of radio propagation and scattering phenomena observed when a radio source is occulted by the solar corona has formed the basis for probing the solar corona for over four decades. The purpose of this paper is to review the subject of transients — variations in the radio occultation measurements that appear different from those of the background solar wind. A major surprise in the...

Context. Faraday rotation measurements of extragalactic radio sources during coronal occultation allow assessment of both the electron density distribution and the three-dimensional magnetic field topology in the outer solar corona. Aims. We simulate the three-dimensional structure of both the coronal magnetic field and the electron density distribution in order to reproduce the excess Faraday ...
متن کاملThe Solar Coronal Magnetic Field Measurements With SOLARC
Direct solar coronal magnetic field measurements have become possible since recent development of high-sensitivity infrared detection technology. The SOLARC instrument installed on Mt. The Fe 1075 nm forbidden coronal emission line (CEL) is potent...
